Help Protect the Peace of Shadybrook Park

Shadybrook Park is a place where families, seniors, and local residents come to enjoy quiet walks, nature, and a peaceful community atmosphere. The proposed installation of pickleball courts in the park threatens that balance through significant noise pollution that occurs whenever the courts are in use—often for long, continuous periods of time.

While pickleball is a growing and enjoyable sport, the sharp, repetitive sound generated by pickleball paddles and balls can carry far beyond the immediate court area. Studies and community feedback from other cities have shown that this noise is disruptive to nearby homes, impacts quality of life, and can lead to ongoing community conflict.

Despite suggestions of noise barriers, these measures are not sufficient. Pickleball noise has a unique acoustic profile that easily cuts through typical park infrastructure. Even with barriers, the sound remains intrusive and can be heard hundreds of meters away.

Shadybrook Park is simply not the appropriate location for this type of high-impact recreational activity. There are other areas within Pickering that are better suited—spaces farther from homes and sensitive areas, where pickleball players can enjoy the sport without disturbing the surrounding neighbourhood.

We are asking the City of Pickering to reconsider the location of these courts and protect the tranquility that Shadybrook residents value.
